Without even attending this seminar I could have answered the question with an answer
of no, refugees and migrants are not adequately protected by international law. There are
little to no laws regarding the movement of migrants and how a country can treat them, if
they even allow them into their country. Most countries discourage the entrance of refugees
into their country because it creates an overflow of people that they do not know what to do
with. Ms. Cloonan believes the same, she says that her organization always tries to bring in
migrants or refugees to speak to the countries they come from to provide awareness to the
mother country. There have recently been new rules implemented, based on gender and age,
as well as the notion that families are never separated. Although refugees and migrants aren’t
adequately protected by international law now, they are making positive strides towards
being protected properly, like they deserve.
