Technology and the changes it brings can have a very big effect on our lives. Which
technological change has had the largest effect on life in this country? Why?
The Internet; Impact on Humanity
Since the beginning of our known human history, people have had the need to rely on
communication for their daily life tasks. We are a social dependable species and in the past
we’ve used our communication skills for different reasons, for example, using our voice to
create sounds as codes for hunting, long distance smoke signals that can be interpreted
according to the message that needed to be delivered. Century after century human beings need
for long distance communication has increased, mankind has invented many methods of
communication, such as letters, telegraph, Morse code, phonograph, telephone, television, etc.
With each advance in technology, we were led to the most important invention of the twentieth
century, the Internet.
As a consequence, the internet not only changed our access to means of communication, it has
also completely changed our methods of learning, obtaining information and relation to each
other. It was the Canadian sociologist Marshall McLuhan, who was considered one of the
founding fathers of the Theory of Communication that said, the world would someday be a
“global village”, a place where all the people can communicate simultaneously, and it wouldn’t
matter where that person is on the globe. With this revolution, that was one day called
“ARPANET” that vision of McLuhan became a reality. As a result, a single message can have
a thousand receivers and these at the same time become messengers, this infinite feedback is
not only a reality, it’s also a necessity.
