The Importance of Independence
As the child of Chinese immigrants, Gish Jen experiences a stark contrast
between her experience at home and her experience outside of it. In her nonfiction
work, Tiger Writing: Art, Culture, and the Interdependent Self, Gish gives her
understanding about the two kinds of values, especially the Interdependent Self and
the Independent Self.
