The Hero’s Journey and Sonny’s Blues
In the short story Sonny’s Blues, there are two main characters in the story. They are the
narrator and his younger brother, Sonny. Throughout the story, it is difficult to recognize which
character is best fitted as the hero of this story. However, it is not one of these characters. But
instead it is both of characters that are the heroes. The narrator receives the call to adventure
from his mother, but he quickly refuses the call by not initially writing to Sonny while he was in
prison. And Sonny’s call to adventure was when his brother finally wrote to him in prison, and
