The Gypsy Eyed Girl
Hypothesis: Gypsy Eyed Girl operates in a perfectly competitive industry.
Background: Gypsy Eyed Girl is a jewelry store on Etsy and is owned by Jhanavi Pomerantz.
Jhanavi started her jewelry business two years ago on Etsy. When she first entered the market of
Hawaiian made jewelry, she had a hyper focus on presentation through photography. After
several months of building a loyal client list, she started to shift her focus to the product and
being a reliable seller. Jhanavi is an art major at University of Hawaii: Manoa. She says that her
jewelry business is her artistic outlet. She purchases her sunrise sea shells from local divers and
purchases the findings (chains and jewels) from the internet.
Interview:
1. What kind of products and services does your jewelry business provide?
I make custom gifts/special presents for weddings and anniversaries. I use sunrise
seashells that I purchase from a friend that dives part-time at the North Shore. I purchase
findings online as well.
2. How do you make or get your products?
I either buy online or source locally.
3. Who are your customers?
Considering I have my main store on Etsy, my customers are worldwide.
4. Which companies compete with yours?
Pretty much every company that sells some form of shell jewelry competes with mine.
Mainly local companies like the boutiques in Kailua.
5. Do you think the products you sell are like other local companies that sell and make
sunrise shell necklaces?
Yes
6. What makes your product different from your competitors?
I pay a lot of attention to detail. I don’t purchase cheap chains or beads or jewels. On my
Etsy page, I say that my products include “Italian made clasps, Czech glass beads, etc.
I have a lot of diversity in my materials. I really put a lot of focus on customizing each
necklace to the customer so that they come back.
