The Gilded Age of America (1860-1900) was a period that most would label as a
time necessary for America’s growth. However, when asked the question, “Did America live up
to the reputation as the place where dreams came true during this age?” One is faced with the
challenge of answering that question in a simple yes or no form. The Gilded Age, as put by Mark
Twain, means “glittering on the surface, but corrupt underneath.” This meaning although it looks
good from the outside, inside was more corrupt and unsettled. And so we move on to answering
our main question.
One of the important details of the Gilded Age was the economic growth present during
this time. The rapid growth of the economy generated vast amounts of wealth. New products and
technology such as railroads stretching across the country, soon to be phone lines, radio, mass-
