Gender has been one of the biggest topics in the news in recent years. Whether it be
about the LGBTQ community, or gender inequality, you can almost always hear stories about
gender in the news. In today’s world, it’s acceptable to be a homosexual, transgender, or any
other type that falls under the LGBTQ label. Also, people are allowed to change genders, be a
part of both genders, or declare their own gender. Whether it be because of political, religious, or
personal beliefs, many people think that if someone is born a male, or female, they should
remain it until their death. On the other hand, you have many people that believe that if someone
feels like they identify as female, but they were born a male, then they should have the right to
become a female.This leads a lot of people in today’s world to ask the question, what is gender?
What many people confuse, is that gender, and sex, are the same thing. Contrary to the common
belief, they’re not. Sex is the biological difference between males, and females, while gender is
an individual’s concept of themselves. In the U.S., people do have the rights to have a gender
reassignment surgery, whether people agree with it or not. In the past, it has been “frowned
upon” to consider yourself apart of the LGBTQ community. Earlier in the decade when gay
marriage was legalized, it allowed people who knew they were gay, to “come out”, and be proud
of them being gay. Normally in history, if you identified as a homosexual you were “looked
down on”, and some people even thought it was a mental illness. With what people know today,

that was proven to be a myth. As for gender equality, many people have fought for gender
equality for generations. Luckily, in today’s society, men, and women, have the same the same
opportunities in life, which was a lot different decades ago. The only problem people still have
with gender equality, is the difference in pay between the sexes. Gender isn’t whether you’re a
male, or female, it’s whatever someone identifies to himself / herself as.
