The Face of Addiction
The war against drugs has been a hot topic across the world which transcends all borders
and boundaries. At the mere mention of drug addicts the first thing that comes to mind for most
of us would be a disgruntled none attractive person which we would assume to be up to no good.
Perhaps we would automatically imagine a gang member whom we would assume to be
dangerous and out to harm us and our family. Many of us are guilty of this pre judgements per
say that inevitable discriminates against what could be less fortunate people. Perhaps you have
seen this done when a person with low appealing clothes and rough looking walks into an
expensive restaurant…. They would more than likely get turned away. There are also those
addicts that are actually harmful not just to society but to themselves. These can be some of the
most hidden addicts. Some of the most functioning addicts have developed a mastermind type of
mentality that somehow always seems to mask reality and hide their true identity. Perhaps we’ve
seen this in athletes whom abuse steroids but go undetected for many years. But what about a
single mother of 2 kids? Would we assume her to not be dangerous just because she is a mother
holding her child? Most of us would consider her addiction less harmful because we think she
looks harmless and has a job. This is the main lead to stereotyping as well as profiling. We fail
