The Cycle
Eudora Welty presents a sad reality about a cycle that is Phoenix Jackson’s reality. Welty guides
us through Phoenix repetitive life in a cycle; she is unable to escape an understanding of her life that
she has come to peace with. Phoenix’s cycle shows oppression, vitality, humility, and determination
regardless of her sense that she will travel this path again and again.
Welty first expression of familiarity of being here before, comes from Phoenix first line in the
story “all you foxes, owls, beetles” without going recognition of her location she already knows of
