More Christians died for their faith in the twentieth-century than the previous 19
centuries combined (Christianity.com, n.d., para. 1). The thought alone is chilling; however, it
must be placed back into context. From the founding of the Church until the Renaissance in the
14th and 15th centuries, the global Christian population reached about one person in each 99
because it was largely contained in Northern Africa and Europe. Beginning with the trade
expansion into Asia and the discovery of the Americas, there was an exponential global Christian
population boom that reached its peak in the twentieth century. From 1934 to 1994, the global
Christian community increased an astounding 1,300 percent in comparison to the overall
population increase of 400 percent; therefore, by 1994, one in every 10 persons was a Christian
(Morris, 1996). So, in reality, more Christians are dying for their faith because there are more
