The Contribution of Women to the American Revolution
Women played a major role in the American Revolution, although we only know the roles
of a few of them. Some women acted as cooks and launders, while others helped out in the
field. Others were able to act as nurses and work alongside doctors and surgeons. There were
also women who were more extreme, acting as spies, and even disguising themselves as men so
that they could fight. No matter what their role was, they were very important.
Many of the women who played a role in the American Revolution were wives and
daughters of officers or soldiers, and were known as camp followers. We will never know who
many of these women were because they were never listed on any records, since they were not
