The Civil War: North vs South
Civil- Relating to ordinary citizens in their concerns as distinct from military or ecclesiastical
matters. (New oxford American dictionary) War- A state or conflict between different nations or
states or different groups within a nation or state.(New Oxford American dictionary) The
American Civil War in 1861 to 1865 was a war of many expectations.The Civil War is a war
between opposing groups of citizens from the same country. In 1861, two parts of America went
to war against each other. No one expected the Civil War to be long. It became one of the worst
wars in American history. Lasting longer than planned due to the poor leadership of the north
and the unorganized south. A war that broke out over slavery causing the north and the south to
battle shortly after Abraham Lincoln was north also had a 97% over the south weapons
manufacturing. While the North had 75,000 volunteers soldiers only 16,000 was trained military
compared to the south who had to start from scratch. After building an army of 100,000 soldiers
they created a navy and authorizing privateers to seize union ships, but equipping their soldiers
and sailors proved a far greater challenge. (Keene,13.1.2)
