The Changes of Human Nature – Grete’s Perspective
Since my brother had been changed into a bug, my family changed as well: father had to
find work; mother and I had to do some housework; and also, we had to rent out a room in
order to cover living expenses. After my brother became a bug, until his eventual death, I
increasingly realized that even the people that used to be close to me changed, once he
became a burden and useless, the ugly side of human nature had shown out clearly.
One morning, when father urged Gregor on again and again because he was late for work,
only I noticed that there was something wrong with my brother. I knocked his door lightly
and asked, “Gregor? Are you all right? Do you need anything?” (Kafka, 8) When father
went back for breakfast, I still whispered, “Gregor, open the door, I beg you.” (8) I noticed
that my brother did not like fresh food as much as he used to. “I brought him, to test his
taste, an entire selection, all spread out on an old newspaper” (37, 38). And I also realized
that my brother would not eat in front of me. “I went away very quickly and even turned
