For almost seventy years, the debate over the use of the atomic bomb on the Japanese
cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has continued. The decision by President Harry Truman
to use the fearsome and history altering weapon was not one that was made lightly nor
was it without consequences for every nation and individual on the planet. This essay will
illustrate that this fateful choice was the correct one given the circumstances at the time;
despite the legacy that it has left to the modern world.
