The Broken Heart
John Donne gives a vivid image of his thoughts and experiences about love in his
poem The Broken Heart. John’s poem is about him having a broken heart for over a year
and the lasting effects of a broken heart. In this essay, there will be three points to
discuss John Donne’s feelings about love, those points include love causes grief or
sorrow, love consumes like an animal, and love can permanently leave you broken.
In the first stanza, John Donne gives his reader insight that he was at one time in
love for a year, which was a deteriorating experience, by stating that he has had the
plague a year (Line 6). The plague, otherwise known as the Black Death, surfaced in the
14th century, which killed almost 100 million people (History, 2010). The plague was an
