The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975
The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975 is a 2011 documentary film, directed by Göran Olsson, that examines the
evolution of the Black Power movement in American society from 1967 to 1975 as viewed through Swedish
journalists and filmmaker. This film consists of footage shot by Swedish reporters in 1967-1975. It does not
presume to tell the whole story of the Black Power Movement but to show it was perceived by some Swedish
filmmakers.
1967
1. Swedes wanted to understand and portray that America through sound and image – as it really is.
2. Poet, Abiodun Oyewole, believes that there wouldn’t be an America if it wasn’t for Black People.
3. Black Power Activist Stokely Carmichael 1967 believes that the United States does not have a conscience.
4. According to Talib Kweli, Stokely Carmichael understood what his job was very early, and he understood
his job was still important to Dr. King but the first to speak about Black Power.
5. Stokely Carmichael believed that those who refused to deal with non-violent civil rights activists like Dr.
King just means they have to deal with this young generation.
6. Mable Carmichael, Stokely’s mom, feels like she is dying every time he is arrested.
7. Mable Carmichael’s husband believed that he was unable to get consistent employment in America since
he was a colored man.
8. Stokley Carmichael means he has always been in jail when he says that he was born in jail.
9. Rapper Talib Kweli believed that he was questioned by the FBI in 2010 because the FBI is still scared of
Carmichael.
10. According to Kweli, we have rappers who are talking about shooting each other and killing, but the FBI
is not looking for that. “They are looking at me because I am listening to a speech from 40 years ago.” It
shows you the power of those words.

stronger position.
