The Babus of Nayanjore is a play which was written by the famous Rabdrinath Tagore. The
play highlights the plight and the demise of a man named Kailash Babu who was one of the
most reputed people in Nayanjore. Their family were very rich until one day tragedy struck.
First was the tragedy of the floods, which destroyed their family business and left them
almost on the verge of bankruptcy, second was the death of his father which prompted him to
go to Calcutta as their family business was demolished. People had known has reputation
through word of mouth in Nayanjore and he began to interact a lot with the people of the
society and people were intrigued to talk to him cause of his inquisitiveness regarding the
well-being of the society.
The play moves on highlighting the life and nature of Thakur Dada and describes as to why
the narrator dislikes Kailas Babu. He made mockery of Thakur Dada. The narrator was a self-
made man and he wanted everyone to recognise his achievements and what he had done in
life to get there. But everyone used to be very influenced by Kailas Babu and this made the
narrator jealous and insecure because he sacrificed a lot to get to this point whereas Kailas
Babu was gifted everything on a platter.
Moreover, the narrator’s jealousy of Kailash Babu was so intense that he even went to the
length of bringing an imposter who posed as the civil servant Chota Lat Sahib who
subsequently stole his ancient heirlooms, the narrator had a nice laugh but Kusum was
heartbroken and decided not to tell her grandfather. When the narrator seems Kusum crying
in the corner he starts to realize his mistake and things took an extraordinary turn.
The narrator realizes that ‘in the corner of the room, there was a tender human heart beating.’
It appears as though Kusum is unworthy of the narrator, he even realizes what his actions had
done to Kailash Babu, he decides to reconcile with Kailash Babu and in the end the narrator
