Dietrich tends to stand in the middle when it comes to deciding whether or not the bombings
upon Japan were necessary. He does not tend to side with anyone but more so defends each side
equally. He writes a section on why the bomb was needed or justified and another section on
why the bomb was not needed or unjustified. Dietrich has worked for several Northwest
newspapers, including The Seattle Times, and as a correspondent in Washington, D.C. He was
one of a team of four Seattle Times reporters who won a Pulitzer in national reporting for
coverage of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. His article assisted my paper by interpreting both
sides as having beneficial qualities which I try to invoke in the introduction of my essay.

Freeman discusses the argument of whether or not the atomic bombs were necessary. He uses a
unique approach in discussing this topic by writing about the myths behind the war. His writing
