The Army Crew Team
The JV team continues to win against the Varsity team because of attitudes and
physiological dimensions, not physical or technique. Individually and even as small sub-teams,
members on the Varity team won every strength and conditioning test and proved their rowing
techniques were superior to the JV team. But when they acted as one unit, they Varsity team
would be defeated. Furthermore, it was determined through tests and exercises that the JV team
was not winning because they were improving, simply the Varsity team was getting worse.
The JV had a better mentality of teamwork, which is a critical component for this sport. The
JV team embraced that sometimes they would lose and sometimes they would win, but they
would do it together. They acted as a team because it was one for all or all for nothing. However,
individuals of the Varsity team seemed to blame their own self or even point fingers at who was
the weak link and slowing the team down. Their attitude and focus were about the individual, not
the team unit. The JV team also seemed to embrace the physiological importance of teamwork;
they supported their coach’s expertise and training activities that engaged mental skills and
utilizing beliefs and attitudes to help improve performance. The Varsity team discredited these
activities and even insulted it calling it “touchy-feely.” The JV team trusted their coach and the
Varsity team seemed to doubt his methods and intentions. Towards the end, after the Varsity
