The Ambiguous causes to the Civil War
The United States civil war began in April 12th, 1861 with the fire upon Fort Sumter and
ended April 9th, 1865 with the North coming out as victorious after Robert E. Lee surrendered its
last major army to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox courthouse. An approximate 620,000 men
lost their lives in the war, making the Civil war one of the bloodiest war’s the United States has
ever been involved in. There is no controversy in any of that, and the question should not be who
was victorious in the Civil war, but rather, what were the causes that led up to the civil war?
What was the reason behind the blood filled dispute? Historians have invested their time and
resources into trying to answer that question, and as a result we have a wide of scope of answers.
Some historians claim that slavery was the only and most pivotal cause of the civil war. Others
argue that the sectional crisis erupted because of states rights, and yet others declare that it was
