Dangerous Driving
You might think that drinking and driving is the most dangerous way to drive, but a study
by Car and Drivers magazine proved that texting impacts your driving skills far more than
driving drunk. Texting while driving and driving drunk are both dangerous because your
reaction time is slowed which might cause an accident.
When you are driving drunk, you reaction time is slowed because your brain is not fully
functioning, but you are still watching the road and trying to drive normally. When you are
texting and driving your brain is paying attention to the phone and not the road. Even
though you are not drunk, your reaction time is slowed because you are not looking at the
road. It’s hard to react to the things that are in front of you if you are not looking at them.
Texting only takes your eyes off the road for an average of five seconds per text, we might
not think that is a long time, but five seconds driving at 50mph is how long it takes to drive
a length of a football field. Which you do every time you send a text while driving.
Both texting while driving and drinking while driving cause many accidents, injuries, and
death every day. Texting and driving cause eleven deaths every day while drinking and
driving cause one death every 48 minutes. In 2011 23% of collisions involved cell phones
which equaled to 1.3 million crashes.
Both are illegal but people still do them. 57% of teens in states with laws again texting
