The first step in the scientific method is to ask a question. By asking a question it allows
one to narrow down what they will be studying. A good question would be narrow enough to
study within a geography and time frame. Sociologist develop an operational definition which
identifies an observational condition of the concept. According to Keirns et al. (2015), “The
operational definition must be valid, appropriate, and meaningful. And it must be reliable,
meaning that results will be close to uniform when tested on more than one person.” For
example, is texting and driving in the United States safe for people aged fifteen to thirty?
