Texas Issue Essay
Many people see Texas as a state that loves guns and this is true as more than 35.9% of
Texans own a gun. Although this seems like a reasonable percentage of gun owner’s recent
events have started to fuel the argument of gun condole in the state. This is especially the case
after recent mass shootings and gun violence has left the nation split on what to do. This has in
turn started many debates on if gun rules should be more strictly enforced. In this argument there
are two sides, one side what more gun control whereas the other side wants gun rights. “Gun
rights” refers to the right to keep and bear arms, whereas “gun control” refers to the policies and
laws that are enacted to regulate the manufacture, sale, possession, and use of firearms. After
resent mass shooting that have happened in Texas and in the U.S. the topic of gun control has
gained more momentum. The argument has been ramping up for many years now with no
solution at hand yet. As both sides believe that their ways are the only way to prevent these acts
of violence onto innocent people. This issue is very important in Texas due to having one of the
least restrictive gun control laws of any state. This is a very polarizing issue as both sides have
valid points in the argument of gun control and gun rights.
A major debate in Texas over this issue is that guns are the rights of a citizen and should
not be controlled by the government. In that they want no more regulation than is already
present. A major reasoning for this ideology is that more gun control would make citizens less
safe. This idea is shared among many critics of gun control. They believe this because they are
under the impression that even if the government takes guns from citizens that people with
malicious intent can still acquire them illegally. This would leave the citizen defenseless and
criminals with easier targets. The article states, “Armed thugs who are intent on committing evil
usually don’t try to shoot up a police station where their victims are armed. No, they target
locations like the Oregon mall … or the theatre in Aurora, Colo. …or Virginia Tech …—all
places where guns were illegal, even for law-abiding citizens.”. Appointments of regulation see
mass shooting as people with malicious intent preying on those that are defenseless and thus
believe that if more citizens were allowed to carry their weapons it would deter these mass
shooters. This intern would theoretically keep innocents safe and criminals and bad people at bay
out of fear of being killed.
Many people against gun control believe that gun control would leave the people
vulnerable to a corrupt government as they believe that if the guns are taken away they would
have no defense against the government if it were to become corrupt to the point where the
