• Let’s governor nullify bills, joint resolutions, and appropriation
items
• Can use the threat of the veto to influence how legislative
develops
• Line item veto – The governors can remove particular elements
from bills or resolutions that have otherwise passed
• Veto can be overridden by a 2/3 vote in each chamber
• After receiving bill governor has 10 days to sign a veto
• If legislation is out session when the governor signs the veto, it
cannot be overridden by the legislation
• Frequent vetoes can be an indicator that the governor is too weak
or lacks the political skills to influence the legislation or the
budgetary process
o Can be fixed by courting legislator i.e. George W. Bush
