1. After watching the Organizational Design video, explain how you would expect
organizational culture to be different in organic organizational structures versus
mechanistic organizational structures.
Organizational culture typically has a system of shared values, assumptions, beliefs and
meanings that are shared amongst members that dictates how people conduct themselves within
an organization. The organization then uses structure to instill work behaviors and attitudes into
their employees. The structure of a company is an important determinant. It allows the
companies to control and/or adapt to different aspects, activities and changes that happen within
the company. Structure also allows the organization to identify the need for changes and how to
respond to those changes. Organic organizational structures and mechanistic organizational
structures are at two different ends of the spectrum.
Employees who prefer “a structure characterized by extensive departmentalization, high
formalization, a limited information network, and centralization, (Robbins 262)” would much
rather work under a mechanistic structure. Companies who use this structure are typically
controlling. There is a well-defined chain of command that delegates duties and responsibilities
