Don Quixote is infamous as being one of the best novels. This can likely be attributed to
the ingenuity of its author Cervantes. On the surface, it seems as this work was written as
primarily as a source of entertainment, but upon deeper inspection it becomes evident that
Cervantes has a complexity to his work. Not only is Don Quixote a laughable character, but he
also is model used to comment on humanity and the progress of man. Cervantes’s style of
comedy in this novel is similar to that in contemporary works. This could perhaps be because he
popularized this style of humor.
In modern works, humor is used to lighten the mood in addition to entertainment. Things
are not always just silly to be funny, but rather there is an underlying message behind the
comedy. There is a comedic relief from things being ridiculous and hyperbole. Cervantes does
