Technology
We live in a time of change thanks to technology, which is constantly evolving.
Technology is a substantial part of our daily lives. After many years of improvement, it has
reached its peak today. It is obvious that technology has facilitated our lives and has made the
performance of certain tasks much more convenient. With it we can do most things that were
deemed to be impossible in the past. However, the establishment of technology comes with a few
disadvantages. Even though technology has made communication much easier, in some aspects
technology has proven itself to be an unfortunate commodity considering that it increases the rate
of bullying, causes obesity from a young age, and elevates pollution in our society.
It is difficult for many people to understand and admit that technology is a key factor in
encouraging bullying. With standardized phones, tablets, and other telecommunication devices, it
is easy for people to hide behind their screens and send hurtful messages to others. Kids are no
longer able to escape their tormentors in school as technology has allowed bullies to continue
their torture at home through online methods. As of 2014, 52% of young people have reported
that they have been cyber bullied. This rate can only increase because kids are more likely to say
things online than they would in person. Most cyber-bullies believe that they are protected when
they attack anonymously. As a result, they start to incorporate bullying into their everyday lives.
They don’t realize how much of an effect their comments really have on their victims. Cyber

bullying in general leads many people to feel isolated, alone, and vulnerable. As a result, the rate
of depression and suicide among teens has gone up. Technology allows bullies to feel hidden
from the possibility of being caught and this motivates them to attack more frequently which
evidently leads to the intensification of bullying.
Obesity is one of the many negative results of technology. With technological devices
available for children at a very young age, they grow attached to using them. Instead of playing
outside and getting the exercise they need, they spend their days in front of the television or
computer screen all day. Technology disturbs children from carrying out necessary tasks like
exercising from a young age and as they get older, obesity is a potential outcome. AAP has
estimated that the average child can spend upwards of 7 hours of TV, internet usage and video
games per day. Developing these habits during childhood will make it a habit in adulthood.
