Introduction:
The technological revolution began long time ago around the world, almost 50 years ago
with the development of computers, software, and other revolutionary technology which
have changed and shaped the way people live today. Technology has changed the way
people perform on a their everyday life and helped people accomplish things that were
considered to be impossible. Smartphones, computers, the Internet, and other devices play
a key role in the daily lives of most people around the world. When looking at the
advertising industry, it is easy to identify the importance of technology and the major role
it plays in the industry. With the uprising of social media websites and new electronic
devices capable of helping spread advertisements, a new form of advertising has been
created. Advertising is now spread out more than it used to be and is accessible to people
on a daily basis. Technological advancements and improvements have also allowed
customers to get a virtual experience of what products are like before purchasing them.
There are also different technological advancements that have been slowly developing
over the years that people are still not aware of.
Social Media:
Social media plays an important role in the lives of many people around the world today. It
is a way of communicating with family, friends, and loved ones on a daily basis. Social
media helps people interact with one another without having to actually be there; they
don’t have to be there and see each other face to face. There are many websites, programs,
and applications used for running different social media websites. Within these social
media websites or programs, there are different ways in which companies can incorporate
and put their advertisements. Some companies create profiles on the social media website
itself, others incorporate their advertisements as part of the social media program. These
are not the only forms in which companies can combine their advertisements with the
social media host. A brief examination of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter will help
identify the different roles advertising companies have in implementing and applying their
advertisements within social media websites.
Facebook:
One of the most popular social media network providers today is considered to be
Facebook. In fact due to the company’s success, it has recently filed for its initial public
offering and therefore became a traded company on the NASDAQ stock market
(Sabbagh). Facebook has a total of 1.19 billion users around the world and is therefore a

great source for advertising companies (Protalinski). Not only can the companies advertise
products, software and other items to the users, but they also have access to information
about the users themselves. Facebook charges companies different fees for placing their
advertisements on their website. The fees are calculated based on the time period the ad
will be placed in, the location of the advertisement and how accessible it is to the user.
Facebook implements a click-through rate that measures how often people click on the
advertisements placed on the website (Facebook). The social media website has been
developing and generating high revenue mainly based on selling advertising space and
sponsorship. Facebook has also developed a mobile app that allows its users to have access
to the websites contents on the go. They can access their profile through their Smartphones
and therefore have access to the advertisements on the websites at the same time.
Instagram:
Similar to Facebook, Instagram is a rapidly growing social media network provider.
Although the company is not fully developed like Facebook, it is still a great tool that is
used by companies to advertise products. However, instagram is spreading all over the
world nowadays and becoming as popular as Facebook is. Unlike Facebook, Instagram
mainly focuses on their Smartphone application. There is a website for the company only
for signing up and making an account, but it is not used as much as the application on the
smart phones. Instagram mainly focuses on photos, whereas Facebook focuses on several
different forms of communication. Users can follow each other on the Instagram
application and will have a constant feed of the different uploaded photos from their
friends or followers. Businesses, small or big, tend to place advertisements on the
