Tambourines to Glory Essay
Tambourines to Glory is a unique story in which relationships, love, lust and religion all
come together in both bad and good ways. Two girls, Essie and Laura, do not live such a
luxurious life so they open a store front church to try to raise money. Now Laura isn’t
much of a religious girl but she has street smarts and knows how to get along with people.
Her ability to preach and Essie’s ability to sing is what gave them the idea to form a
church. Essie is a good quiet believer of God. She doesn’t gamble or drink, however in the
contrary Laura is the type of girl that gambles and drinks her life away. She is the type of
girl that mingles with different guys every other night.They have been friends for a long
time so when the idea came along Essie makes a “connection” with God and is in favor of
starting the church. As they are having their regular mass sessions one day a guy named
Buddy comes along.
Buddy is a character in the story that is very flirtatious but sly. Laura being the way that
she is, talks to Buddy and lets him take her out for a drink. She slowly starts to fall for him
while spending time with him. Buddy starts to come up with ideas for the church so they
can raise more money. Although the ideas are unorthodox, Laura goes along with them not
