Course Description
Develop students’ capacity to analyze the economic environments in which business entities operate and
understand how managerial decisions can vary under different constraints that each economic environment places
on a manager’s pursuit of his/her goals. Its focus will be on analyzing the functioning of markets, the economic
behavior of firms and other economic agents under various market structures, and the economic and social
implications of the outcomes.
Topics include costs, demand, pricing, market structure, market equilibrium, policy effects, and strategic
interaction. The course should enhance the understanding of how firms maximize profits and markets operate as
well as develop the capability in making economic predictions. It should also serve as a foundation for further
MBA studies in management, accounting, finance, and marketing.

Outcomes
1. Develop greater knowledge of the types of problems faced by firm managers.
2. Improve economic intuition concerning these problems and their solutions.
3. Build Excel skills to solve a wide variety of problems.
4. Improve presentation skills, including developing an ability to convey information to others and to clearly
explain and defend your decisions and results.
5. Improve small-group and inter-personal skills

Required Textbook (FREE ACCESS through the LSUS library)
The textbook is available in electronic format through the university library. You can download PDF chapters
from the textbook through the library page, though PDFs of each week’s assigned chapters will be posted in the
weekly module on Moodle. If you need an alternative to the PDF format that is screen reader accessible, contact
the instructor.

All assignments for this course will be posted and completed online using Moodle. You SHOULD NOT use
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer as your web browser when accessing Moodle. ProctorU will be used for proctoring
module exams, and requires the use of Google’s Chrome web browser. Chrome is available for free.

Additional Required Materials
1. Additional reading materials will be posted on the course Moodle page.
2. You must have access to a computer with a functioning webcam and microphone, and a reliable high-
speed internet connection.
3. Required web browser is Google’s Chrome, available for free download. You may use Mozilla’s
Firefox to access course materials but module exams must be completed using Chrome for the
ProctorU extension to work.
4. Students must have a calculator for this class. Graphing calculators, or any other calculators that
might allow the storage of information are not permitted. Examples of compliant calculators are
available on the course Moodle page. You are NOT required to use one of those specific calculators
but your calculator should be very similar. You will need your calculator to complete homework
problems and will be required to use your calculator when completing your module exams. You will
not have access to your cellphone while completing module exams so you should use the calculator
you will be using for your exams when completing your homework so you are familiar with its
functionality.
5. The LSUS campus does have a campus-wide computer lab in the University Center. If you do not
have access to these resources, and do not have access to the computer lab at LSUS, it is your
responsibility to locate these resources.
