1. The Philippine society is more of patriarchal rather than matriarchal. The father has the sole
responsibility for the support of his family, the eldest son takes care of the widowed mother, and
a role model to his siblings. But lately, men’s roles have evolved. In not more than 300 words
discuss the changing roles of fathers, or men in general in the Philippine society. Be sure to cite
situations in your discussion.
– Men are superior in our society in the context of strength and privileges. The role of men are
specific, they work to provide for their family, while the mother stays at home taking care of
the children. Over the years, modernization took place not only in the technological aspect
but the sociological aspect as well. Some coined the term houseband, which is the male
equivalent of the housewife. They are the ones who took on the role of being the light of the
house, taking care of the children, even cleaning the house, and doing laundry. In the early
years, women were not even allowed to go to school, vote, and drive a car, but after years of
fighting for their rights they showed how they are strong enough to stand on their own.
This significant change is rather acceptable, but of course it hurts the male ego of some who
doesn’t particularly understand this changing of roles. It is quite understandable also that the
eldest son takes care of the family in the event of the father’s absence. Although,
breadwinners excluding the parents, oftentimes have no gender particularity in helping for
the welfare of the family. The patriarchal side of our society often leads to the basis of women
being weak and timid, which is not true. This kind of stereotyping will lead to nowhere, each
gender has its roles to play in our society. If ever change comes our way, we should let it be.
