Students should be late
*Beep Beep*, you climb out of the bed and check the time. “Oh man it's time for school
already?”, you say with a big frowny face. From preschool to high school, no matter what
country you are in, school will always start very early in the morning. A minute too slow after the
bell and you would be considered late and be punished; varying from a call home to the parents
to even getting expelled. Because of this, students are forced to get up and make it before the
“deadline” no matter how little sleep they get. This is unacceptable and we need to take a look
at how being tardy harms students academically and mentally.
Anne Wheaton, who works at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in
Georgia, is an epidemiologist and concluded that the cause behind health problems such as
high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke has been directly linked with teens’ lack of sleep.
She stated “Activities such as sports and work, along with family and social schedules, may
make it difficult for students to adjust the time they go to bed. As puberty starts, hormones
changes, in particular, the secretion of melatonin, shift the natural circadian rhythm of
adolescents, making it increasingly difficult for them to fall asleep early in the evening. But to get
to school on time, sometimes they have to wake up as early as 5:30 a.m”, she says. We’re
literally fighting biology!
“Lack of sleep forces teens to lose a large chunk of what’s known as REM — or rapid
eye movement. It can lead to an increased risk of obesity, depression, drug use and other
