Structured Literacy and Dyslexic Learners
What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is a neurological condition that makes learning difficult.
People with dyslexia have a hard time learning to read. They also have a hard time interpreting
words, symbols, and letters. However, dyslexia does not affect one’s general intelligence.
According to Fallon & Katz, 2020, it is identified by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word
recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. While there are many ways to help
students with dyslexia, majority of the school systems will have a specialized instruction and
special arrangements for tests (Gavin, 2018). What does this mean for students with dyslexia
especially in English language arts? Students with dyslexia may need extra time for taking notes
in class and extra time for homework and tests. The teacher would have to implement an
intervention to support dyslexic learners that would benefit that student.
