Storytelling About Who We Are
Generation after generation of storytelling has given people a unique glimpse into their
history. Two great writers, Edwidge Danticat and Jonathan Foer, have given first-hand accounts
about their own experiences with storytelling within their families. These prospectives have
given both of them an advantage into unique understandings about the world they come from and
the world they currently live in.
Edwidge Danticat gives a detailed depiction of life growing up in Haiti while not having
the benefit of biological parents. Her life evolved her into an adopted child raised by an uncle
and aunt who would become strong, everlasting parental figures, especially her uncle. Edwidge
was taught life lessons through various stories told by various relatives. One in particular who
told a majority of these stories was Granme Melina. She told folklore to the neighborhood
