Adolescence is a period of heightened emotional and psychological
agitation that usually occurs between ages 11-20. G. Stanley Hall coined the term
Storm and Stress to describe this phenomenon that occurs during adolescence.
J.J. Arnett responded to this view in his 1999 article, Storm and Stress
Reconsidered. Storm and Stress in relation to adolescent development refers to
the challenges faced and dealt with during this growth process. Conflict with
parents, mood disruptions, and the involvement in risky behavior are the three
main focuses of both Hall and Arnett. Individual and cultural differences in
development in adolescents have various impacts and effects on what type of
stress both adolescents and parents face and how they choose to deal with it.
Adolescence is a period in development between the onset of puberty and
adulthood. It usually begins between 11 and 13 years of age with the appearance
of secondary sex characteristics. Conflict with parents usually arise when the
adolescent tends to be rebellious due to their search of freedom and authority.
