Steve Biko
Steve Biko was born in December 18, 1946, in King William’s Town. South Africa which is now
known as Eastern Cape province. Biko activism started when he was in high school as a result he
was expelled which he then enrolled in St. Francis College in the Mariannhill area of KwaZulu–
Natal. After he graduated in 1966 he attended the University of Natal Medical School. In 1968
Steve Biko co-founded the South African Students’ Organization. which is an all black student
organization that is focuses on the struggle of discrimination and later leading the Black
Consciousness Movement in South Africa.
In 1969 Biko became the SASO’s president, and just three years later in 1972 he was expelled
from the University for his activism. But during that same year he co-founded a different black
activist group called the Black People’s Convention, which later became the central organization
for the BCM, and throughout the 1970s continued to grow. In 1973 Steve Biko was banned by
the Discrimination regime. Biko had been banned from writing or speaking publicly, speaking to
Africa.
