Enrolling into a community college was a big step towards having a great career. Meeting new
colleagues, professors, and advisors can be a scary experience for some and breaking out of the shy
bubble can be difficult. When I started my education at Sandhills Community College I assumed going to
class then home immediately afterward would be my daily routine. By my second semester, I started to
branch out and experience community college life. Participating in activities and making new friends that
shared my interest and accomplishments. Through my experiences, I was baffled by a number of students
that participated in these activities or joined clubs/groups that could help them succeeded in their career
goals for the future. Being a part of certain clubs have opened doors for me to be a voice for my student
body and I have been actively trying to recruit students to join clubs within Sandhills Community
College. Getting students to be involved has become a difficult task. My research is focusing on why
students do or do not want to be involved in extracurricular activities and to study what can be done to
boost student participation.
