Starbucks and Conservation International
Starbucks is one of the largest suppliers of coffee. In mid-2002 Starbucks had a
collaborative effort with the environmental nonprofit, Conservation International (CI). Starbucks
and CI had mutual interests in the practices of producing and supplying coffee. During this time,
an overproduction of coffee created a surplus that caused world coffee to plummet and make
profit difficult for growers. The Fair Trade movement got involved in the coffee industry acting
as a price floor set a minimum price for Starbucks to purchase from its certified growers,
however quality of the Fair Trade coffee beans was not meeting the Starbucks standard. In
addition to the market and industry pressures facing Starbucks, they had to stay true to their own
company values.
