The general public thinks standardized tests are the tools that best assess college students’ abilities.
In “83 seconds : How fast–paced standardized testing has created a New Glass Ceiling”, Hacker
argues that we should change standardized test because they are causing discrimination against
women from selective schools and corporate–sponsored scholarships. I agree Hacker’s claim.
Standardized tests do not reflect all of what students can do, even if it’s not necessarily cause
gender discrimination.
According to Axiom learning, a test coaching company, “It is not what you know, It is how fast you
can show it”(165p). In other words, standardized tests do not test your knowledge rather they they
test your speed and confidence. Therefore, standardized tests are more advantageous to the
students who can complete the problem quicker.
Next, according to Mangukiya, a author, “College offers young people the opportunity to live, work,
and socialize and it is more than exams”(154p). In other words, standardized tests are only a small
part in college and we can experience even more meaningful things like practical experience and
socializing. Therefore, standardized tests limit many of the values we can experience in college and
undermine the purpose of college entrance.
Last, economic power is a factor that increases the difference in scores in standardized tests.
According to The College Board, the average SAT scores differed greatly depending on the family
wealth. There is more than 100 points difference between more than $200,000 and less than $20,000
