1. The email between the two lawyers was initiated with the young lawyers sarcastic
demeanor in saying that she is better off by working for herself rather than for an
experienced partner, in this case, the other participant, Will Korman. Will Korman, the
other participant in this exchange had a calm tone, but it is clear he was a bit angry in
how he was disrespected. He wanted to make it clear to her that she had made good first
impressions through the two interviews, but after her “immature” email, it is apparent in
Will Korman’s heart that he dodged a bullet. Diana Abdala’s message was written in a
way to make Will Korman feel as if he is not up to her standards. Abdala’s message
production is childish in that she had the audacity to write in her email that she was better
off working on her own where she could reap 100% of the benefits she would supposedly
sow. It was despicable and rude for her to say that to a potential employer, who has more
knowledge and experience, especially someone who was looking forward to working and
mentoring her. Will Korman’s message interpretation is quite obvious and straightforward
in his tone of words. Right from the beginning he is decoding the message when he sees
that an email is complimented with a 9:30pm voicemail message stating that she is
backing out. If she would of just showed up in person and showed an ounce of dignity by
respectfully declining Korman’s offer, it would of left a much less sour taste in her mouth
and Korman would of still respected her as a young lawyer trying to make a name for
herself. Instead, she is probably still feeling the backlash from the respectable lawyer
community. Korman expressed exactly what he felt in his response. With cunning words,
he explained that the email smacked of immaturity and was quite unprofessional.
Through the technological channels of email, Abdala portrayed her immaturity and
cowardly side to the world; she potentially ruined her career before it began. It is much
easier to be rude and arrogant through email than in person; it is likely that she would
have showed much more respect and used a different choice of words in a face-to-face
conversation. If a face-to-face conversation would of ended regrettably, at least in person
she wouldn’t have her embarrassing conversation floating around in cyber space for
