AQ2a- Give example’s of non-physical barriers that give greater access to a community.
When we think of barriers for people who have disabilities, what often comes to mind are
curbs, stairs, narrow passages, sidewalk gratings. What we may forget about are the
non-physical barriers, such as signs, loudspeaker announcements and traffic signals.
By presenting these types of information in a variety of ways, it not only helps those that
may have an impediment but the general community as well. For example, when the
airport wants to inform passengers of a gate change, they generally make an announcement
on the loudspeaker. But sometimes it’s very noisy at the airport or the announcer has an
accent that makes it hard to understand what they are saying. If the airlines made this
information available in a variety of ways, such as text alerts, signage at the terminal, and
personnel at the old and new gates – it would be much easier for everyone to get the
message.
AQ2b- What is an IEP, and why is it important?
The federal law called the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires public schools
to create an IEP for every child 3-22 years old that gets special education services from
them.
The purpose of the IEP is to address each of the child’s learning challenges and include
