2001: A Space Odyssey
In 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL displays both actions and levels of humanity that show
he is both an agent of his own free will and that he is also predetermined. HAL is capable of
communicating, recognizing faces, interpreting lip reading, expressing emotions, and playing
chess, displaying signs as if he was programmed to and as if he was not. HAL was the
passengers main form of socialization the whole mission and I feel as if HAL connected with the
passengers and presented feelings and emotions to Dave Bowman and Frank Poole.
I believe HAL showed he was an agent of his own free will when he proved that
everybody is not perfect and we all have flaws. HAL said the AE-35 unit failed, even though it
did not. During this scene, Bowman and Poole communicate in a room away from HAL thinking
he cannot hear him, but little did they know HAL can read lips. Bowman and Poole
