Sojourner Truth was an American abolitionist and women’s rights activist. She was a strong
leader in her time which she fought for the rights of slaves then later rights for women
(editors.com, 2009). Her real name is Isabella Baumfree born in 1797 in Ulster County, NY.
Born into slavery and escaped with her daughter in 1826. Sold at the age of nine for $100 with a
flock of sheep.
Isabella took her former slave owner to court after he illegally sold her 5-year-old son. Months
on trial she finally won back custody of her son (editors.com, 2009). As the first black woman to
ever sue a white man and win. She had courage like no other and did something no one had
