Today, I watched “When the Levee Broke”. The documentary is about when Hurricane
Katrina hit New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005 and the aftermath of the city and the people
trapped in New Orleans. This was undoubtedly the most disastrous natural disaster to hit
the American people. There’s a lot of things I didn’t know about Hurricane Katrina from
prior to watching this documentary. It is evident that many things could’ve been done
differently in terms of the preparation and the rescue and help other people of New
Orleans. What really surprised me was in the beginning of the documentary, where many
people of New Orleans said that they thought the levee breaking was a conspiracy, in order
to protect thenicer areas of New Orleans. It really makes sense, because there is literally
one street that brings in millions of dollars to New Orleans so in theory want to protect it at
all cost. If this is true this would a concept of social conflict theory.It is evident that there
are several social to explain this situation. I felt that social conflict theory was major one.
Social conflict theory is a social theory which argues that people within society who have
more material and non-material resources and more powerful groups use their power in
order to exploit groups with less power. This is shown even in the beginning of Hurricane
Katrina, when the government ordered an evacuation for everyone in the city. The thing
