Do you think resocialization requires a total institution? Why, or why not? Can you think
of any other ways someone could be resocialized?
I do believe resocialization requires a total institution. Resocialization is when old
behaviors that were helpful in a previous role are removed because they are no longer
needed. “A total institution is an isolated, enclosed social system whose primary
purpose is to control most aspects of its participants’ lives” (Crossman 2016). Examples
of a total institution are prisons and the military. Resocialization does not occur often to
people who are not being initiated into a total institution. For example, if a person loses
his/her job, he/she is more than likely to find a new job that relates in some form to
his/her previous job due to his/her prior knowledge in the field. Another example is a
