4. The topic I have chosen to do this essay on is the role of automobiles in American
society. In this essay I will briefly explain the advantages and disadvantages brought about by a
society so tightly revolved around automobiles and vehicular transportation. I will also analyze
the connection between the Old Amish Order and automobiles.
In today’s fast paced world, cars and trucks are a necessity for most Americans living in
the standard industrialized community. Our relationship with our automobiles has become almost
lustful in some cases. It is true that most people rely very heavily on their vehicles and means of
transportation. Of course, where would we be without them? Unlike the ways of the Old Amish
Order, everything is not so close together for most people. With that being said, society is
dependent on them for multiple reasons. The use of automobiles allows us faster transportation to
and from places such as work and home. The use of our cars and trucks also cuts down on
vacation costs when used in opposition of flying or train transportation. Our choice of vehicle
influences our location of work and home choice as well. For example, living 60 miles away
from your job would greatly influence your choice of vehicle because you would want comfort,
but good mileage to cut down on costs of fuel. There are different styles and colors to fit almost
any personal preference of automobile now as well. This provides a great luxury to those who
