*Socialization is” a continuing process whereby an individual acquires a personal identity and
learns the norms, values, behavior, and social skills appropriate to his or her social position”.
(Dictionary.com) What this is to me is what makes a person who they are through a process that
is learned through the world around people.
*It is important to reflect on education as a site of socialization because through the education
system is where people can learn about many of the norms, values, behaviors, and some social
skills throughout history. Education must be used as a site of socialization because it serves as a
way for people to understand their position relative to the society around them. People can
acquire their social identity through education.
For me, I would have to say that it was a mixture of high school and college. In high school, I
had to find what type of person I was and how to properly interact with other people around me.
High school was a means of a way to figuring out who I really am. During my years at high
school, I used several methods of trying to do just that. One of the main methods that I had used
throughout my high school career was to keep my group of friends very small. I knew that if I
had only a small group of real friends, I would never lose my identity as a person. If I was to
have hung out with a much larger group of people, I was afraid that who I was would get lost. I
would try to be one of the “cool” people. I would not act as myself. I feel now that I had this
small group throughout high school that I could slowly expand my group. Doing this is helping
me grow as a person. It is teaching me to open my shell to other people. If I had decided not to, I
