What are the disadvantages of socialization? (1-1.5 pages)
When I think of socialization, I think of a process that affords one the ability to function in a civilized society. This is made possible
because of learned reactions to stimuli and interaction with factors in ones immediate environment. Merriam-Webster gives the following
definitions of socialization: “To behave in a certain way that is acceptable in society;” “To fit or train for a social environment;” “To talk to and
do things with other people in a friendly way.” Socialization starts at a very early age, from the teachings of our mother. Thru breast feeding,
mothers teach infants how to ‘eat’ and when to sleep. The human infant comes into the world as biological organism with animal needs. He is
gradually moulded into a social being and he learns social ways of acting and feeling. Without this process of moulding, the society could not
continue itself, nor could culture exist, nor could the individual become a person. This process of moulding is called ‘Socialization’.” (“The
Importance of Socialization in Society”) In essence socialization is the process of learning how to deal with other people in the world around you.
