Methods that can be used to combat mental health stigma vary. There are many ways
for a social worker to get involved with advocacy and lobbying. Lobbying the healthcare
industry is an excellent way to get involved with legislation as is being part of a committee or a
board member for an advocacy group. Reducing mental health stigma would include such
practices as providing education materials early on at a high school or possibly middle school
level. Discussing mental health openly with the public and providing ways that the public can
become more involved can also provide an outlet for the social worker to being awareness.
Politically, lobbying with a non-profit can bring about real policy change when it comes
to mental health. Bringing solid research, and well thought out legislation to state and national
politicians can bring about significant change. Serving on a local committee can be a first step in
bringing about change at a lower level. Part of advocacy as a social worker involves being
politically involved, this means being aware of how to approach your local and state officials
