Select a social issue of interest to you and discuss the role of the generalist social worker as it
relates to the issue. Example: On the issue of poverty, how does the social worker advocate on
the micro, mezzo, exo, and macro level? Select at least 7 of the 13 roles to discuss in the paper.
You will find the list of roles in Chapter 2 of your text in Box 2.3 Roles Played by Generalist
Social Workers.
Bullying
Enabler: a social worker who provides encouragement, offers hope, helps clients identify and focus on
goals, and enables them to make choices that improve their functioning. Bullying is a common issue
that happens to many students both in school and online. A client may talk to a counselor and express
feelings of dropping out, or thoughts of self-harm or harm to others. This role of social worker may
encourage the individual to stay in school, help them focus on extra-curricular activities that may
introduce them to other students with similar interests, and they may provide hope for their future
while also providing them with other healthier choice that will benefit their life and their self-image.
Mediator: a trained professional who helps resolve conflicts between client systems at one or more
levels of the environment while playing a neutral role. In every school there is at least one counselor. If
